Saying goodbye is never easy. But we can lift everyone’s spirits with a going away party to send them off!
Starting the Planning
Going away parties should be held within two weeks of the guest of honors departure. It can be a surprise, but make sure you do your research, as they might be busy getting ready for the move and other people might be planning parties for them too.
Gifts aren’t required for going away parties and in fact, it should be noted on the invitation for guests not to bring any. The guest of honor is already packing up their life; they don’t need any additional baggage.
As always, start the theme with the invitations. Here are a few theme ideas:
Bon Voyage – A Going Away party is the perfect time to put to implement all of the map, passport, luggage tag and plane ticket ideas you can think of. Here are a few ideas to get your creative mind going. (Photo: Bestdestinationwedding.com)
Future Destination – Give everyone a glimpse into the life the guest of honor is soon to be living and center the whole party on that location. Are they headed to Texas? Serve Tex-Mex food and drink in big glasses and on big platters, because everything is big in Texas. Are they headed overseas to Italy? Have everyone indulge in pasta dishes and pizza of course, paired with a variety of wines. (Photo: ohhappyday.com)
Making the memories last…
A Going Away Party should leave everyone with great memories, here are a few ideas to capture memories and have the guest of honor take them along.
Picture is worth a thousand words – Have all of the guests bring a copy of their favorite photo with or of the guest of honor. Upon the guests arrival they can place the picture in a scrapbook along with a message.
If you have time to prepare, ask guests to email you those same favorite pictures and create a slideshow to surprise the guest of honor with. Everyone will enjoy sharing in the memories and is sure to bring about tears, laughter and smiles.
Map it Out – Frame a matted map piece centered on the location the guest of honor is moving to. Guests can leave their farewell message on the matting for the guest of honor to remember the love of their friends.
You don’t need to have too many games or activities, as you want the guest of honor to have the freedom to enjoy their friends and families as they please. If you do want to have a game though, you can play one of the guest of honors favorites, or play a trivia game centered on the guest of honor. But, you can and should plan to have an open floor for guests and the guest of honor to make any remarks.
Whatever theme you choose, whether it is a surprise or not, the ultimate goal of a going away party is to make the guest of honor feel appreciated. While a simple party might do the trick, I say, make it a party that makes them not want to leave!
